Commemoration of the 70 year anniversary of the occupation of the Baltic’s takes place in the European Parliament

Strasbourg, 15th of June 2010 – Members of the European Parliament gathered by the memorial plaque, honoring those deported from the Baltic nations, to commemorate the 70 year anniversary of the occupation of the Baltic nations. In order to prevent such historical mistakes from reoccurring, many MEPs continue to remind the world of the horrors committed by the Stalinist regime.

Additionally in the opening of the Strasbourg plenary session the president of the European Parliament, Jery Buzek, reminded his colleagues that June marks the 70 year anniversary of the Soviet Unions invasion and occupation of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania:

“70 years ago, Lithuania was attacked by the Soviet Union and they launched attacks also on Latvia and Estonia. This was after the Von Ribbentrop-Molotov pact was signed between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. In January ’83, 27 years ago, the European Union as an international organization attacked this invasion of the Baltic states saying that the Soviet invasion had never been recognized by a majority of world states.”
