First meeting of the ‘Reconciliation of European Histories’ informal group
On Thursday, 6 May 2010, 35 MEPs from five political groups established ‘Reconciliation of European Histories,’ an informal group of MEPs.
The main objectives of the group are to reconcile the different historical narratives in Europe and to consolidate them into a united European story. Following in the footsteps of the Parliaments proclamation of August 23 as the European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Stalinism and Nazism (2009), the adopted resolution on the end of the Second World War in Europe (2005), and other such acts of the European Parliament, the group will provide a platform for MEPs to raise public awareness on the need to unify European history.
Through formal and informal discussion, articles, statements, and by helping to develop cultural and educational projects on European history, the group hopes to raise public awareness and remembrance at the European level.
Latvian MEP Sandra Kalniete (EPP) was elected as Chair of the group.
