Meeting of the Reconciliation of European Histories Group
November 10th, Brussels Belgium, the informal group of MEPs in the European Parliament ‘Reconciliation of European Histories’ once again held its group meeting. The group, whose main objective is “to reconcile the different historical narratives in Europe and to consolidate them into a united European story,” meet with the Permanent Representative to the EU of Poland, Jan Tombiński as well as the Honorary President of the Hungarian World Federation, László Tőkés. The group discussed with their guests the upcoming presidencies of Hungary and Poland in the European Union, in 2011, and how these presidencies will further the cause of historical reconciliation and better the education of history in Europe.
Ambassador Tombiński highlighted that during the Polish presidency their goals would include the endorsement of an EU network of secret police files and to incorporate this network into EU education. The Polish presidency also plans to take further steps in the implementation of the Stockholm program, which includes the reintegration of the crimes of totalitarianism in the EU collective memory.
Additionally, the members of the group welcomed the initiative to organize on the 29th of March a conference entitled “What do Young Europeans know about Totalitarianisms?”. And, furthermore, the group noted that the upcoming year, 2011, is the 20th anniversary since the Soviet Union ceased to exist, which brought immense political changes to Europe as well as the world.
